Overview
Understand the pathway before you act.
Eligibility, timing, evidence and risk should be assessed together before an application or response is prepared.
A visitor record controls how long a person may remain in Canada as a visitor; it is not a visitor visa and does not guarantee re-entry. Extension and restoration planning should start with the actual status-expiry date, purpose of stay, financial support, immigration history and intended departure plan.
Visitor record extensions
A visitor who wants to remain longer should apply before current status expires. If there is no passport stamp or other document setting the period of stay, the usual period may be six months from entry, but the complete entry record must be checked. The requested duration should be supported by a credible purpose, available funds and compliance history.
Longer or repeated stays
Repeated extensions are assessed in context. The application should explain why the stay remains temporary, how expenses will be paid, what has changed since entry or any earlier extension, and how the visitor will comply with the new departure date.
Restoration of visitor status
Restoration may be available within 90 days after loss of status if the person remains eligible and meets the regulatory requirements. It is discretionary and does not erase unauthorized activity or guarantee approval. A person who also worked or studied without authorization requires a broader assessment.
A restoration request is not the same as a timely extension. Do not assume that filing restoration recreates status or permits work or study while the request is pending.
Travel and re-entry
A visitor record extends authorized stay inside Canada. It does not replace a visitor visa or electronic travel authorization. Leaving Canada can affect the practical value of an in-Canada application, and re-entry remains a separate decision.
How Beyond Borders Law can help
- Confirm the status-expiry date and appropriate application type.
- Prepare accepted visitor-record extension or restoration applications.
- Explain longer or repeated stays with a coherent temporary-purpose record.
- Coordinate extension issues with a refusal, travel-document or inadmissibility concern.
Gather passport, entry stamp, visitor record or travel history, current address and status documents, proof of funds and support, purpose and requested duration, previous applications, and any expiry or refusal notice.
